Crisis is nothing new to SLLS. The low-income families and communities of color that we serve are always disproportionately impacted by disasters. Hurricane Ida has impacted every parish in the SLLS service area. Over 810,000 FEMA claims have been filed, with 15% of those coming from the Baton Rouge area. We expect 3 to 5 years of families needing assistance with FEMA denials, shady contractors seeking to take advantage of people desperate to return home, and more. SLLS is prepared to make sure the most vulnerable people are not left behind in the recovery process.
